Cousins playing with weapon, smoking pot led to Baton Rouge teen being shot, critically injured Wednesday _lowres

Corie Deshawn Burge, 18

A casual gathering of cousins smoking marijuana and playing with what was thought to be an unloaded firearm is what led to a teenager being shot in the chest Wednesday, police said.

A Baton Rouge Police report says Corie Deshawn Burge, 18, and his cousins were in his room in the 2300 block of Jefferson Avenue just before 4 p.m. when he pointed a gun at his 16-year-old cousin and pulled the trigger, thinking he’d taken bullets out of the weapon.

The 16-year-old, who was not identified, was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, the report said.

Burge told police he tried hiding the gun under the house because he was scared of getting in trouble, but authorities found the weapon, according to the report.

Burge was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Jail on counts of negligent injuring and illegal use of a weapon. The 16-year-old is expected to survive, said Baton Rouge Police Cpl. Don Coppola.
