Baton Rouge police on Sunday arrested a 38-year-old man accused of attacking his wife Oct. 29 with a knife and hammer after she told him she wanted a divorce.
Shedrick Lejander, 3606 Brady St., Baton Rouge, stabbed the woman multiple times in the face and neck, and beat her with a hammer at about 9:41 a.m., according to an arrest warrant. He then stabbed himself in the neck, the warrant says.
When police were called to the house and found the woman lying in a pool of blood, Lejander told them someone had broken into their home and stabbed them, the warrant says. The woman then pointed at Lejander and said he stabbed her, police said.
The woman was taken to a hospital and treated for “serious injuries,” the warrant says.
Lejander was booked into Parish Prison on counts of attempted second-degree murder and domestic abuse battery.
Nine people displaced in apartment fire

The fire started on the first floor of Sable Chase at Sherwood, 1860 Blvd. de Province, around 3 p.m. and spread to the second story shortly after, said Curt Monte, a BRFD spokesman. No foul play is suspected, he said. Firefighters arrived just after 3 p.m. and spent more than 30 minutes battling the flames. Six other apartments sustained heavy water damage. The cause is still undetermined, Monte said.
