A teenager was shot and killed during an apparent drug deal in the 17300 block of Airline Highway Tuesday night around 10 p.m., said East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s office spokeswoman Casey Rayborn Hicks in a news release.

Two other teens were arrested in the incident, but the gunman believed responsible for shooting Sajaray Franklin, 17, is still at large.

Franklin, of Baton Rouge, died after he and Bodrick Tremaine Tuggle, 17, met with an unidentified man they intended to rob of $1,500 during a marijuana sale, Hicks said. Tuggle stayed behind in a vehicle while his compatriot spoke with the man, according to the release, and later found Franklin injured after hearing shots.

Tuggle apparently also conspired with 19-year-old Christopher Gray in the robbery. The group had planned to split the money three ways, Hicks said.

Gray and Tuggle were arrested Wednesday, each on a count of second-degree murder. Gray, who was not present during the crime, also faces a count of conspiracy to commit armed robbery, and Tuggle a count of armed robbery.

Though Gray and Tuggle are not the suspected killers, Hicks said they’re accused of murder because the state law allows somebody to be booked or charged with murder if they were involved in another crime — like armed robbery — that ended with a person being killed “even though he had no intent to kill or to inflict great bodily harm.”

The district attorney may choose to reduce the charges, Hicks said.

It’s believed the unidentified man involved in the drug deal, who hasn’t been found, is responsible for the killing, Hicks said. EBRSO is still investigating the crime.
