ORIGINAL STORY: East Baton Rouge Parish sheriff’s detectives were investigating a shooting in the Gardere area late Saturday that left one person dead in what would mark the first homicide of 2016.
Few details were available Saturday night of what led up to the shooting in the 8600 block of Coy Avenue, which Casey Rayborn Hicks, a spokeswoman for the Sheriff’s Office, said detectives are investigating as a homicide.
She said the victim was found dead at the scene.
Another person was taken from there to the hospital with minor injuries, Emergency Medical Services spokesman Mike Chustz said Saturday evening.
Emma Slan, a woman at the scene, said one of the victims was her daughter but she did not know whether her daughter was killed or injured.
“Someone called me with her phone, and I could hear her screaming in the background,” Saln said
She said she had not seen or heard from her daughter since about 1 p.m. Saturday. She said she didn’t know why her daughter was at the apartment complex on Coy Avenue, as her daughter lives on a different side of town.
“I can’t find her,” Slan said, before driving off.
More details will be released as information becomes available.
