Aon Longridge Avenuepartments burn

A fire Tuesday at an apartment complex on Longridge Avenue destroyed two units and damaged six others, a Baton Rouge Fire Department spokesman said.

Firefighters arrived at 11888 Longridge Ave., at 11:52 a.m. and found two two-story units engulfed in flames, spokesman Curt Monte said in a news release.

Flames had spread into the attic before firefighters arrived, so firefighters called in a second alarm for backup four minutes after the first units arrived, Monte said.

The blaze was brought under control at 1:02 p.m., Monte said.

Four additional units in the complex suffered heavy smoke and water damage, and two others had light smoke damage, Monte said.

Eighteen people were displaced because of the fire, Monte said. Red Cross was called to assist those residents.

Firefighters are still trying to determine the cause of the fire but believe an oxygen tank used by one of the residents helped fuel the fire in its initial phase, Monte said.

The blaze caused about $450,000 in damage, but no one was injured, Monte said.
