Baton Rouge police arrested two men in the Monday morning shooting death of a third man near the intersection of East Grant and Tennessee streets.

According to police reports, Cory Handy, 19, was driving a silver Toyota Camry around 4 a.m. Monday when he decided to stop the car in the 600 block of East Grant Street.

Handy told police he stopped the car because he needed to urinate, according to an arrest report.

But Cody Sanders, 20, who was a passenger in the car, told police the car was stopped because he and Handy were arguing with a third passenger, 20-year-old Cameron Matthews.

According to Sanders’ account of the incident as described in an arrest report, Handy gave Sanders a pistol and told him to shoot Matthews. Sanders told police he did as he was told, fatally shooting Matthews, the arrest report says.

Handy told police a different story in which Sanders and Matthews exited the car to urinate in the street. At some point, Handy “suddenly heard several gunshots,” a report says, “and when he looked up, he observed Sanders standing over the victim with a gun in his hand.”

Handy and Sanders left the scene together after the shooting, police said in the reports.

Matthews, of 1188 Rosenwald Road, Apt. 11, Baton Rouge, was found dead at the scene when first responders arrived shortly before 4 a.m.

Handy, of 12630 Davis Lane, Norwood, and Sanders, of 652 Meadow Glen Ave., Zachary, were booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on counts of second-degree murder.
