Nine people escaped and a dog was rescued in a house fire Thursday on Vermillion Drive, said Baton Rouge Fire Department spokesman Mark Miles.

Firefighters responded to the fire about 11:30 a.m. Thursday at 16412 Vermillion Drive, Miles said. Nine people were in the home at the time and all exited safely. Firefighters were able to search for and rescue a dog that was in the house, Miles said.

No foul play is suspected in the fire. Flames started in the laundry room and spread, heavily damaging the house, Miles said.

The fire was brought under control just after noon, Miles said.
