The sound of a smoke alarm helped a Brownfields couple escape unharmed from a Tuesday night house fire, Brownfields Fire Chief Carroll Campbell said.

Firefighters responded to the couple’s house in the 7200 block of Northampton Drive at about 11:45 p.m. to find flames coming through the home’s roof, Campbell said.

The blaze, for which the cause is still under investigation, was under control by midnight. It did not appear the fire was intentionally set, Campbell said.

The ringing smoke alarm awoke the sleeping couple, which enabled the couple’s escape from the fire, he said.

Firefighters with the Baton Rouge, Central and District 6 fire departments assisted Brownfields department in extinguishing the blaze. EMS, the Sheriff’s Office and The American Red Cross also responded to the scene, Campbell said.
