A 37-year-old Baker man recently released from prison after serving 18 years was arrested Saturday afternoon after throwing a hammer through the windshield of the vehicle where his girlfriend was hiding with two children after a fight.

Corey Mercadel was booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on counts of domestic abuse battery and child endangerment.

His girlfriend told Baker police that she and Mercadel had an argument after which he grabbed her around the neck, according to his affidavit of probable cause. She pushed him away, grabbed her 3- and 10-year-old children and got into her vehicle, the affidavit says. Mercadel then threw a hammer at the windshield.

Mercadel has a criminal past, with prior arrests in Orleans and Calcasieu parishes, according to the affidavit of probable cause. He told police Saturday he recently was released from prison after serving an 18-year sentence, but the police did not say why he was in prison.
