A man accused of breaking into a Baton Rouge home and fatally shooting a man Friday morning was taken into custody Saturday following a traffic stop by a State Police trooper in St. John the Baptist Parish, authorities said.
Corey Pittman, 33, no address given, was returned to Baton Rouge to be booked with first-degree murder in the shooting death of 35-year-old Kenneth Barton, according to Cpl. L’Jean McKneely, a Baton Rouge police spokesman.
He said a State Police trooper arrested Pittman after a traffic stop.
Three men broke into a home in the 2700 block of Cedar Avenue Friday and fatally shot Barton, who had confronted them during an attempted robbery, authorities have said. Barton, a Jackson man who had been visiting one of the home’s residents, was shot in the midsection and found dead in a nearby canal.
As soon as the shooting happened inside the home, the three men fled the scene on foot. McKneely said other arrests are possible.
Police have asked anyone with information about the shooting to call them at (225) 389-4869 or Crime Stoppers at (225) 344-7867.
