A Baton Rouge man is dead and another is in critical condition after a Tuesday night shooting outside a Baton Rouge apartment building on Jade Avenue.

Henry McGuffey, 28, was shot about 11:15 p.m. in a parking lot at 1820 Jade Ave., said Casey Rayborn Hicks, a spokeswoman for the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office. He was pronounced dead at the scene, she said.

Kisha Jackson, who said she is McGuffey’s wife’s sister, said Wednesday that he had just returned home from work when he and a friend went to look for his “little nephew.” As the two walked across the street from the apartment building where McGuffey lived, they were shot.

Jackson said she was inside when she heard the shots.

Jackson said the injured 21-year-old man was in critical condition as of Wednesday afternoon.

Both men were found by deputies after the Sheriff’s Office received reports of shots fired.

Parish Coroner Dr. Beau Clark said Wednesday afternoon that McGuffey’s death was ruled a homicide after an autopsy and that his death was caused by a gunshot wound to the head.

Jackson said she does not believe the shooting was random.

“They were watching him,” she said. “I think they were waiting for him.”

She said the shots sounded like they came from near the apartment as opposed to the street, though she did not see a shooter.

Jackson said she and others in McGuffey’s family believe they know who shot the two victims — two men who hang around the neighborhood. She said she and others in her family had heard before that two men were following the victims.

Jackson said the family still was shocked by the shooting.

“We have no idea why” they were targeted, she said.

Several Sheriff’s Office deputies patrolled Jade Avenue on Wednesday afternoon. Though one deputy said they were doing a routine patrol, Jackson said she believed they were in the area to investigate and catch the shooters.

Jackson said she and the rest of McGuffey’s family moved to Baton Rouge after Hurricane Katrina came through New Orleans, first heading to Texas and then settling in Baton Rouge.

The Sheriff’s Office listed McGuffey’s address as 9337 Bimini Drive based on information on his driver’s license, but Jackson said he lived with other family members, including her, at 1829 Jade Ave.

McGuffey was a husband and father to two children, a 9-year-old boy and 7-year-old girl, as well as to three step-children, she said.

Detectives continue to investigate the shooting.
