A Baton Rouge woman was arrested Friday, accused of picking her 12-year-old son up by a lanyard hanging from his neck and hitting him to the point that he lost consciousness.

Juliette Rose, 36, was at home with her son when he accidentally dropped and broke a decorative plate, angering her, a Baton Rouge police report says.

She picked up her son by the lanyard around his neck with one hand, the report says, and struck him with a wooden paddle about three times with the other. The 12-year-old told police he lost consciousness at that point and that she was no longer hitting him when he woke up.

Police observed a mark around his neck from where the lanyard, holding his school name tag, was choking him and a large red mark on the inner part of his eye.

The boy had signs of previous abuse, including gashes he told police were from his mother hitting him with a metal pipe. He was removed from school Friday and transported to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center to receive treatment for his injuries, the report says.

Rose was arrested when she showed up at the hospital, the report says.

Rose, 6085 East Smiley St., was booked in East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on a count of second-degree cruelty to a juvenile.
