A fire that destroyed a home on Windward Road late Monday night likely began in the kitchen, but its cause is unclear, the Baton Rouge Fire Department announced.

Everyone was in other areas of the two story home, according to one of the residents, when someone heard a noise, fire department spokesman Robert Combs said in a press release. Upon investigating the noise, they found fire in the kitchen and safely fled the house, he said.

When firefighters arrived at 10:52 p.m., the fire was already in the attic, Combs said.

The $380,000 house is considered a total loss, he added.
