A 51-year-old homeless man was shot to death late Thursday at an Airline Highway gas station, said Baton Rouge police spokesman Sgt. L'Jean McKneely.

Leonard Williams was killed while he was helping clean the parking lot of the Cousin's Food Mart at 6288 Airline Highway around 11:40 p.m., McKneely said. A worker at the store said Williams was not employed at the store, but he occasionally cleaned up outside.

Williams was taken to a hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Shiny blue and white star-shaped balloons were tied to a pole outside the gas station as a simple remembrance of Williams on Friday afternoon.

This is the 80th homicide so far this year in East Baton Rouge Parish, bringing the count just five short of becoming the most deadly year since 2010.

There is no known motive or suspect as of Friday at noon, McKneely said.

He asked that anyone with information on the shooting to contact Violent Crimes at (225) 389-4869 or Crime Stoppers at (225) 344-7867.
