St. Louis King of France School students briefly sheltered in the school’s gymnasium after a nearby commercial building on Darryl Drive caught fire Wednesday morning, according to the Baton Rouge Fire Department.
Firefighters found nearly half of the commercial building engulfed in flames when they arrived at 11145 Darryl at 9:22 a.m. The fire was quickly contained, but the building was a total loss. No injuries were reported.
Students and staff briefly sheltered inside the school gym because of the close proximity of the fire to some classrooms. Hazardous materials officers from the Fire Department monitored the air to ensure the school’s safety.
Investigators said the fire, ruled accidental, was caused by workers using a grinder while making repairs to the building.
