Baton Rouge police on Thursday arrested a man accused of burning his 2-year-old son while the boy was staying with him last week.

The child’s mother noticed the burns last Friday when she picked him up from his father, Jamal Ackerson. The mother contacted police and took the boy to the emergency room, where a doctor said he suffered second-degree burns to his hips and buttocks, a Baton Rouge Police Department report says.

Ackerson, 22, told detectives the burns were an accident caused by hot bath water. But an emergency room doctor disputed that claim, telling a detective that hot water would leave “more burns to the victim’s legs if that had been the cause,” the report says.

Ackerson, 4235 Joseph St., was booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on a count of second-degree cruelty to juveniles. He remains in jail on a $20,000 bond, according to online booking records.
