BELLE ROSE — A severe storm Thursday sparked a fire that caused an estimated $1 million in damage to the Gator Stop Super Truck Stop and Casino on La. 70 in Assumption Parish, the Office of State Fire Marshal reported.
The Paincourtville and Pierre Part Volunteer fire departments were dispatched at 4:14 p.m. to 1230 La. 70 to fight a fire in the café portion of the building, according to a news release from State Fire Marshal Butch Browning.
The fire extended to the convenience store and casino portions of the truck stop, the release says.
First responders needed nearly 30 minutes to control the blaze, the release says.
There were no injuries, the release says.
Witnesses told State Fire Marshal’s investigators that they heard a loud boom in the building during a heavy rainstorm, the release says.
Shortly after the boom, the witnesses saw the attic on fire, the release says.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the fire was caused by lightning and that the resulting blaze caused more than $1 million in damage, the release says.
