Baton Rouge police continued to search Saturday for the person who shot a 40-year-old Zachary man twice Friday night.

Daniel Shaffer, 40, 10828 North Old Settlement, Zachary, was found shot sitting inside his vehicle in the 5200 block of Packard Street at 10:47 p.m. Friday, Cpl. L’Jean McKneely said in a news release.

Shaffer was driving and had a woman in the car with him when he pulled alongside someone walking on Packard to ask a question, McKneely said in an interview. At some point, for reasons not known, the person on the street pulled a gun and shot Shaffer, MKneely said.

Shaffer sped away from the shooter and drove about two blocks before stopping and calling police, who arrived shortly after, McKneely said. McKneely said he was unsure if Shaffer was alive when police arrived. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Baton Rouge Emergency Medical Services personnel, McKneely said.

It is unsure whether Shaffer was shot in the 5000 block or the 5400 block of Packard.

The passenger in the car was uninjured, McKneely said.
