An armed intruder broke into a home Monday morning on Greenwell Street and shot the resident once before the resident armed himself and returned fire, police said.

Baton Rouge police were called to the home at 11:20 a.m. and the 22-year-old victim said he was sleeping when someone broke in through a rear window, walked into his bedroom and shot him once in the left thigh with a handgun, police spokesman Cpl. Don Coppola Jr., said.

The resident said he grabbed a gun and fired back as the intruder fled the home, Coppola said.

Police are not sure if the intruder was wounded or if he fired more shots at the resident, Coppola said.

The injury to the resident is not considered life threatening, Coppola said.

The investigation is ongoing and police are asking anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers at (225) 344-7867.
