Baton Rouge police on Wednesday arrested a Hammond man accused in the Oct. 5 rape of a 17-year-old after she fell asleep at a party.

Police say Deante Tate, 20, raped the teen while she was sleeping on the floor of an apartment on Scenic Highway, according to arrest records. The teen told police she had consumed at least four shots of vodka and awoke to find Tate raping her, the records show.

She then began kicking and punching Tate, who ran into another room, police said.

Tate, 207 Noah A. James Drive, was booked Wednesday into Parish Prison on a count of simple rape.

Tullahama Drive home damaged by fire

A fire caused smoke and heat damage to a home on Tullahama Drive on Wednesday evening, authorities said.

Firefighters from the St. George Fire Department arrived at 5757 Tullahama Drive about 5:14 p.m. Wednesday and brought the blaze under control by 5:38 p.m., St. George Fire Department spokesman Eldon Ledoux said in a news release.

Crews contained the fire to a bedroom, although heavy smoke spread throughout the home, Ledoux said. Investigators are looking into the cause.

BR man booked on suspicion of DWI

A Baton Rouge man was arrested and booked into Parish Prison on suspicion of DWI at 9:40 p.m. Tuesday, booking records show.

Dragan Jerkovic, 23, 835 Milner Drive, was booked on first-offense DWI, equipment violation and reckless operation of vehicle.
