Police have identified the victim of a shooting Saturday night on Swan Street near Southern University, according to a news release.

Lawrence King, 22, 12525 Wedgewood Drive, Baker, was found shot at the intersection of Swan Street and Scenic Highway, police spokesman Sgt. Donald Stone said in the release.

Officers working traffic for Southern’s football game Saturday heard the gunshots around 8:20 p.m., Stone said.

King walked up to officers to tell them he had been shot, Stone said.

King later died while being treated in the hospital, Stone said.

Police have an arrest warrant for Maurice C. Francis, 21, 3712 Byron St., for the shooting, Stone said.

Stone said investigators believe King and Francis were arguing at the intersection of Swan Street and Scenic Highway when Francis shot King, Stone said A man who told police working traffic at the Southern University football game that he’d been shot died later from his wounds, a news release says.

Officers were stationed Saturday night near the corner of Scenic Highway and Swan Street, Capt. Elton Brown said in the news release. At 8:20 p.m., the officers heard a single shot, and then saw several people running toward them.

The unnamed victim contacted the officers later and told them he’d been shot, the release says.

The victim was taken to a hospital, where he died while being treated for his injuries, the release says.

Police don’t know the motive for the shooting, the release says, but officers are following several leads.
