An 80-year-old Baton Rouge man changing his tire on Burbank Drive died Thursday when he was struck by a vehicle Drive, according to a Louisiana State Police report.
Lawrence Shepherd Jr. was attempting to change a flat tire on his 1998 Toyota Sienna on the eastbound shoulder Burbank at 6:30 p.m., and was standing at the rear left side of his vehicle, the Troop A report says.
At the same time, Haosheng Huang, 47, of Baton Rouge, was driving eastbound on Burbank in a 2006 Toyota Sienna. For unknown reasons, Huang failed to negotiate a left-hand curve and lost control of his vehicle, the report says. Huang’s vehicle ran off the road and struck Shepherd and his vehicle on the shoulder.
Shepherd suffered fatal injuries, and was pronounced dead at the scene by the East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner’s Office. Huang was properly restrained and was uninjured in the crash.
State Police said impairment is not suspected to be a factor in this crash but a toxicology sample will be taken form Shepherd and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
Huang submitted to a chemical breath test and showed no detectable signs of impairment, the report says.
This crash remains under investigation and charges are pending.
