A house off Florida Boulevard in Baton Rouge was destroyed in a fire late Friday night, the Baton Rouge Fire Department reported.

Firefighters were called to the fire in the 800 block of Castlewood Drive at 11:52 p.m. Friday, fire department spokesman Curt Monte said in a news release.

Two people who were inside the home heard cracking noises and smelled smoke. When they went outside, they saw flames on the eave of the house and called for help, Monte said.

The entire roof was on fire when firefighters arrived a few minutes later, Monte said. They were able to keep the fire from spreading to neighboring homes and brought the blaze under control around 12:38 p.m., he said.

The house is considered a total loss, and Red Cross was called to assist the residents, Monte said.

The cause of the fire has not been determined and remains under investigation.
