The suspect in the killing of a Hammond priest has confessed to the slaying and agreed to extradition to Waveland, Miss., authorities in Florida said Wednesday.
John Manieri, 31, of Waveland, confessed to shooting the Rev. Edward E. Everitt on Sunday night at a beach house in Waveland, a spokesman for the Polk County Sheriff’s Office in Florida said Wednesday afternoon.
Manieri also appeared in court Wednesday and waived his rights to fight extradition to Mississippi, said Donna Wood, a public information officer for the Sheriff’s Office.
He was represented by a public defender in 10th Judicial Circuit Court in Bartow, Fla., the seat of Polk Country, Wood said in a telephone interview.
Manieri is being held in jail in Polk County without bail until he is picked up by authorities from Waveland, Wood said.
Wood declined to give details of Manieri’s confession, saying that material will be turned over to authorities from Waveland.
