Deputies arrested a 17-year-old Scotlandville High School student who had a pistol in his bookbag late Monday morning, the Sheriff’s Office reported.
School administrators found an unloaded .22-caliber revolver in Major Payton’s bookbag after receiving an anonymous tip that the senior had a gun, said Casey Rayborn Hicks, spokeswoman for the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office.
Administrators escorted Payton to the school’s office and contacted the Sheriff’s Office School Drug Task Force, Hicks said.
Payton told deputies he’d moved over the weekend and placed the revolver in the bag for the move but forgot to remove it before heading to school Monday morning, Hicks said.
Payton said he didn’t realize he still had the weapon until he opened his bookbag and the revolver fell onto his desk, Hicks said.
Deputies arrested Payton, of 5617 Prescott Road, and booked him into Parish Prison on counts of illegal carrying of a weapon on school property and violation of a weapons-free zone.
