A Baton Rouge man died Tuesday morning after his car left the road, hit a pole and caught fire at Old Hammond Highway and Millerville Road, the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Department announced.

Brian C. Richoux, 20, of 2750 Millerville Road, was pronounced dead on the scene.

Deputies responded to the crash at about 4:19 a.m.

Richoux exited the Interstate 12, traveling northbound on Millerville at a high rate of speed in his gray Hyndai Tiburon and, according to a witness, was swerving, sheriff’s department spokesperson Casey Rayborn Hicks said.

It appears Richoux continued to drive at a high rate of speed until striking the base of a signal light pole at the intersection, Hicks said, adding the incident is still under investigation.
