Firefighters steered rescue boats through the Amite River on Tuesday evening to rescue a pair of 12-year-old girls stranded in the Frenchtown Road Conservation Area, the Central Fire Department said.

Rescue crews from the Central and East Side fire departments headed into the river north of Florida Boulevard to pick up the two unidentified girls, both of whom had been reported missing earlier in the day, the Central Fire Department said in a Facebook post.

The girls were brought back to a boat landing near Florida Boulevard around 8:30 p.m. and were in good health, the fire department said.

It wasn’t immediately clear how the girls had become stranded in the park.
