Man dies after being struck by car Friday

A car struck and fatally injured a man who walked into its path Friday night on Greenwell Springs Road, State Police said.

William Newsom, 63, Greenwell Springs, was hit by a 2000 Nissan Altima driven by Connie Cutrer, 45, of Zachary, about 7 p.m. Friday, Trooper First Class Russell Graham said Saturday in a news release.

Cutrer was heading north on Greenwell Springs Road, Graham said. When she crossed the intersection though a green light at Frenchtown Road, Newsom walked from into the path of her car from the right, Graham said.

Cutrer was unable to avoid hitting Newsom, Graham said.

Newsom was taken to a hospital, where he died, Graham said.

Cutrer volunteered a breath test, which showed no detectable alcohol in her system, Graham said. No citations have been issued, Graham said.

Early morning fire destroys home, car

An early morning fire destroyed a home and a car Saturday but caused no injuries, the Fire Department said.

A blaze at 6049 Monarch Ave. caused an estimated $275,000 in damage, Fire Department spokesman Barry Mounce said in a news release.

When firefighters arrived at the home about 2:10 a.m., the fire had engulfed the house and flames were shooting through the roof, Mounce said.

The fire spread to the carport and destroyed a late-model sedan, and the heat caused the vinyl siding on the house next door to melt, Mounce said.

Firefighters brought the fire under control by about 3 a.m. The cause of the blaze is under investigation, Mounce said.
