Deputies on Wednesday were investigating the death of a 56-year-old man and his critically injured 28-year-old roommate in what the Sheriff’s Office said appears to be a murder-attempted suicide.

Deputies were called to 9522 Trendale Drive at about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday where they found Gary Graves Jr., 28, critically wounded from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, said Casey Rayborn Hicks, spokeswoman for the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office.

As detectives investigated the scene, they were told to check on Graves’ house at 5240 N. Flannery Road where Damon Dixon also lived. The two were roommates, Hicks said.

When deputies arrived at the home, they found Dixon’s body inside, Hicks said.

Because both the victim and suspect lived in the North Flannery Road house, Hicks said, deputies left immediately after they found Dixon’s body and obtained a warrant before heading back inside to search for evidence.

Deputies obtained the warrant to search the house at about 2 p.m., Hicks said.

Family member of Dixon who began gathering at the home Wednesday afternoon comforted each other but declined to speak with reporters.

Graves remained in the hospital Wednesday afternoon where Hicks said he’s listed in critical condition.

More details will be provided as they become available.
