After a state inspection, Angus Avenue Bridge between Little Farms Drive and Plank Road was closed Friday and will remain closed until at least next week, depending on further evaluation.

The East Baton Rouge city-parish Department of Transportation and Drainage Traffic Engineering Division announced in a news release Friday the bridge would be closed immediately.

“The state completed an inspection yesterday and found deficiencies in the bridge that require that we close it,” said Tom Stephens, chief design and construction engineer. “There’s some rotted timbers under the abutment on the west end of the bridge.”

Stephens said the department will evaluate the bridge next week to see if it can be re-opened with a load limit.

“If it can hold 5 tons or more, we’ll submit a request to reopen it under a limit.”

He said the bridge belongs to the city of Zachary and it will be involved in any decision to reopen. According to the departments latest records, an average of 120 vehicles use the bridge per day.
