A 12-year-old boy walking to school Wednesday morning was struck by a car and is in critical condition, Baton Rouge police said.

Cpl. L’Jean McKneely Jr., a police spokesman, said a 27-year-old woman driving down Evangeline Street at about 7:35 a.m. lost control of her vehicle, swerved off the road and hit the boy.

Investigators said the woman lost control of her vehicle because of some kind of mechanical failure, McKneely said.

“I’m not sure exactly what it was,” McKneely said.

He said investigators had not determined whether the woman will be cited.

“We’re still waiting to hear from investigators,” McKneely said. “It’s still early in the investigation and that is pending.”
