A 27-year-old Baton Rouge man was indicted Wednesday in the Feb. 28 shooting death of his former girlfriend in her Byron Street home.

An East Baton Rouge Parish grand jury charged Johnny Ray Blakes, 6232 Flag St., with second-degree murder in the killing of Rochel Christal, 25.

Blakes is accused of kicking in the front door of Christal’s home at 5819 Byron St. and shooting her multiple times, police have said.

Christal’s three young children, two of whom she had with Blakes, were at the home when the shooting occurred, police stated.

Christal’s boyfriend also was at the home, but fled unharmed from the attack, police have said.

Under Louisiana law, a second-degree murder conviction carries an automatic sentence of life in prison.

Blakes’ case has been assigned to state District Judge Chip Moore.
