An LSU student was hit and seriously injured by a train near campus early Friday after falling asleep on the tracks, police said.

The student was apparently intoxicated when the incident happened about 2 a.m. at the 4800 block of Nicholson Drive, said Cpl. L’Jean McKneely, a Baton Rouge police spokesman.

The student was taken to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center and treated for a laceration on his head and serious injuries to his leg, McKneely said.

No further details were available Friday evening.

Armed robbery reported at LSU

LSU police are investigating an armed robbery Friday evening in the parking lot just outside Kirby Smith Hall.

Armed with a handgun, the robber stole the victim’s phone and wallet about 6:30 p.m., said Capt. Cory Lalonde, an LSU police spokesman.

One dead in I-10 crash near downtown

At least one person died in a crash Friday afternoon on Interstate 10 East at Highland Road, Baton Rouge police said.

Officers were dispatched at 1:47 p.m., said Cpl. L’Jean McKneely, a Baton Rouge police spokesman.

State Police were the first to arrive at the scene, said Trooper First Class Jared Sandifer, a State Police spokesman.

No further details were available early Friday evening.

Faulty heater sparks apartment fire

A faulty bathroom heater sparked a fire Friday afternoon at a Florida Boulevard apartment, officials said.

No one was injured.

The Baton Rouge Fire Department arrived at 10550 Florida Blvd. about 1:44 p.m. Friday and brought the blaze under control within 40 minutes, Fire Department spokesman Mark Miles said in a new release.

Three units sustained fire damage, while six units sustained smoke and water damage, Miles said.

The fire caused about $95,000 in damage to the $595,000 apartment complex, he said.

Five booked on suspicion of DWI

Authorities arrested at least five people suspected of driving while intoxicated in East Baton Rouge Parish and booked them into Parish Prison between 2:30 p.m. Thursday and 2:30 p.m. Friday, booking records show.

Those booked and the counts against them:

Rasheda Deloach, 24, 3146 Dougherty Drive, Baton Rouge, first-offense DWI and license plate required.

Ebonie Gellington, 25, 2923 75th Ave., Baton Rouge, first-offense DWI, reckless operation and driver’s license required.

Travis Kelley, 27, 51403 Allen Drive, Baton Rouge, first-offense DWI and stopping vehicle in a roadway.

Lorna Levens, 51, 2344 N. Acadian Thruway, Baton Rouge, first-offense DWI and possession of schedule-four drug.

Darius Ray, 28, 713 Texas Ave., Ferriday, first-offense DWI, driver’s license suspended or revoked and improper lane usage.
