UPDATE, 9:53 p.m.

The Sheriff’s Office arrested two people after a Zachary man was found Wednesday walking down the street with a gunshot wound that eventually killed him.

The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office responded to a call around 3 p.m. and later identified Derrick Wayne Coates Jr., 20, who was walking on Ligon Road with a gunshot wound, a news release from the Sheriff’s Office says.

Coates was taken to a local hospital, where he died Wednesday evening from his injuries, Casey Rayborn Hicks, spokeswoman for the Sheriff’s Office, said in the release.

An investigation led detectives to 475 E. Flonacher Road, where they discovered, with a search warrant, a large quantity of suspected marijuana and crack cocaine in the living room. The drugs were packaged individually, suggesting illegal narcotics distribution, the release says.

Reggie Jackson, 21, who lived in the house, was arrested on distribution and manufacturing of Schedule I drugs and distribution and manufacturing of Schedule II drugs.

Deputies also arrested a 13-year-old on negligent homicide and illegal use of a weapon, though the child was not identified.
