A bicyclist was struck and killed early Sunday on La. 1 in Iberville Parish, State Police said.

Joshua White, 22, of Plaquemine, was riding his bicycle south on La. 1 near La. 75 around 2 a.m., when a car approached from behind and struck him, Trooper 1st Class Bryan Lee said in a news release.

White, who was not wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene, Lee said.

The driver of the car, Albert Johnson Jr., 50, of Wichita Falls, Texas, and a passenger in his 1999 Honda Accord were taken to Ochsner Hospital in Plaquemine with minor to moderate injuries, Lee said.

It is unclear if White’s bike had the required lights on the front and back, Lee said. White was also wearing dark-colored clothing at the time of the crash.

Toxicology samples were taken from White and Johnson, but it is not yet known if impairment was a factor in the crash, Lee said.
