A Baton Rouge man was arrested Friday after he was accused of biting off part of a man’s ear, threatening to kill another person and telling an apartment complex tenant that he planned to burn the complex down.

East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office deputies said they were called to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center after a man being treated there accused Noberto Gonzales of biting off his ear.

The man told detectives he was at Gonzales’ Jade Avenue apartment and they started fighting for reasons he could not remember due to drinking large amounts of tequila. He woke up with “his ear missing and his face and eyes bruised,” the Sheriff’s Office report says. A witness told deputies the two were arguing over beer money.

The report notes that investigators found the lower portion of the ear on the kitchen floor next to the refrigerator in the apartment. Gonzales, 23, later told deputies he kept the piece of the ear as a trophy.

A woman also called deputies Friday and told them Gonzales became violent after she told him around 1 a.m. that he could not drive after he had been drinking. She told detectives that he threatened to kill her, pointed a broken bottle at her and later threw a chair at her when she tried to leave, the Sheriff’s Office report says.

Another man told deputies Gonzales threatened to burn down the apartment complex where they lived. Investigators found ashes on a counter top in Gonzales’ apartment and several pieces of partially burnt paper towels, the report says.

Deputies arrested Gonzales around 3:45 p.m. Friday at the Jade Avenue apartment complex and he was booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on attempted arson, aggravated domestic abuse and second-degree battery. His bail is set at $75,000.
