A family’s two pets — a cat and a bird — died in a house fire Monday, succumbing to heavy smoke, said Eldon Ledoux, public information officer for the St. George Fire Department.

Only one of the four family members was home at the time. She was on the back patio of the 14535 Commission Ave. home when she noticed the fire and smoke. She was not injured, Ledoux said.

Firefighters were dispatched at 5:57 p.m. and arrived at 6:02 p.m. to find fire blowing out the front door and side windows with smoke coming from the attic vents, Ledoux said. Firefighters entered the home and extinguished the fire at 6:40 p.m.

There was heavy fire and smoke damage throughout the house, Ledoux said.

The cause of the fire is undetermined and is under investigation, he said.
