As part of ongoing efforts to combat human trafficking and prostitution, law enforcement authorities in East Baton Rouge Parish arrested 11 people within the past week on either prostitution or soliciting prostitution allegations.
The investigation was spearheaded by the Louisiana State Police Special Victims Unit, which includes members of the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office. The unit was created to combat child exploitation and investigate child and adult sex trafficking as well as labor trafficking and prostitution across Louisiana, representatives of State Police and the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release Wednesday.
Representatives of several other state and federal agencies also participated in the investigation.
In this particular sting, none of the people located or arrested appeared to be connected to human trafficking, said Lt. J.B. Slaton, a State Police spokesman.
“Once we make an arrest or identify a prostitute or pimp, we investigate further to see if they’re involved in human trafficking,” Slaton said.
“Louisiana State Police will continue to remain vigilant as long as those individuals choosing to promote, solicit and engage in sex crimes remain a threat to the safety of our citizens,” Col. Mike Edmonson, Louisiana State Police’s top commander, said in a prepared statement.
Sheriff Sid Gautreaux echoed the colonel’s sentiments, noting that the agencies are committed to partnering with local, state and federal agencies to identify and assist victims of sex crimes.
“This operation is just one of many steps we are taking to combat sex crimes,” Gautreaux said in a prepared statement.
