A smoke detector alerted the occupant of a house at 2220 Hiawatha Ave. to a fire shortly after 8 p.m. Tuesday, allowing her to safely evacuate, Baton Rouge fire officials said.

Firefighters arrived to find fire coming from the front of the house, according to Mark J. Miles, an assistant public information for the Baton Rouge Fire Department.

The blaze caused heavy fire and smoke damage to the dwelling, he said. The damage is estimated $26,000.

Miles said the fire started in a front bedroom of the home. He said no foul play is suspected, but the cause has not been determined
