A Baton Rouge man was killed early Sunday when his vehicle crossed the center line on Plank Road in Baker and struck another vehicle, State Police said.
Shortly after 1 a.m., Kirkland D. Nelldell, 29, was traveling southbound on Plank Road, south of La. 64, in a 1995 Toyota Corolla. For unknown reasons, his vehicle crossed into the northbound lane and struck a 2017 Nissan Altima driven by James Callender, 57, of Slaughter, police said in a news release.
Nelldell was pronounced dead at the scene by the East Baton Rouge Coroner's Office. Police said he was unrestrained at the time of the crash and was ejected from the vehicle. Police said it was unknown if Nelldell was impaired. A toxicology sample was taken from him to be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
Callender and his passenger were both properly restrained, police said. They were transported to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge with minor injuries. Impairment on the part of Callender is not suspected, police said.
