The Baton Rouge Police Department is investigating a late-night accident that claimed a life Wednesday in the 12100 block of Highway 19, according to a news release issued by Cpl. Don Coppola Jr. of the BRPD,

Traffic homicide investigators’ at-scene investigation of the 10:45 p.m. incident revealed that a 2000 Jeep Liberty was traveling north on Highway 19 at a high rate of speed when the driver -- a 32-year-old male -- lost control of the vehicle and crashed.

Both the driver and his passenger were unrestrained in the vehicle, Coppola said, and were ejected from the Jeep Liberty. The passenger, Vernon Rogers, 34, 12334 Plymouth Drive, later died from his injuries at a local hospital. The driver was not identified in the news release.

Investigators believe that alcohol was not a factor. Theinvestigation is ongoing, Coppola said.
