UPDATED 8:55 p.m. | Baton Rouge police have arrested a man suspected of beating his parents with a hammer Monday and then setting fire to their house while the couple was in a hospital, City Police said late Monday.
Jordan Ray Smith, 28, was arrested late Monday and booked on two counts of cruelty to the infirmed and one count of cultivation and manufacturing of marijuana, said Cpl. L’Jean McKneely, a police spokesman.
Smith, 4624 Park Oak Drive, attacked his 64-year-old mother first, hitting her with a blunt object some time before 3 a.m. while she slept, McKneely said. The son then attacked his 66-year-old father.
While police were at the hospital investigating the beating, McKneely said, other officers were called to the victims’ Parkview Oaks home where a fire was reported.
The fire gutted the back of the home and severely damaged the front, said Baton Rouge Fire Department spokesman Robert Combs.
McKneely said Smith is suspected in the fire but the investigation is not complete.
