A Baton Rouge business owner and former Northwestern State University and NFL football player was shot in the leg early Monday morning, according to the man’s Facebook page.

Nathan Black, 37, said in a Facebook post he was shot in the leg during a robbery around 4 a.m. Monday.

East Baton Rouge sheriff’s deputies were dispatched at 4:20 a.m. to the Briar Hollow town homes off Siegen Lane after reports of shots fired, said Sheriff’s Offices spokeswoman Casey Rayborn Hicks.

Hicks, who didn’t identify the victim by name, said the shooting happened during an attempted robbery and said the victim was taken by private vehicle to the hospital.

Black said in the post he was running after robbers when he was shot and was treated at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center.

The shooting remains under investigation, Hicks said.

Black, a former wide receiver who played for the Carolina Panthers in 2002 and 2003, owns a personal training studio in Baton Rouge. He was also under contract with the New Orleans Saints in 2004 and the Washington Redskins in 2005.
