A house fire early Monday that left a dog dead was ruled by fire investigators to be a case of arson.

Firefighters called to 1865 Birch Street just after 3 a.m. found flames coming from the home, according to a news release from the Baton Rouge Fire Department. Crews could not gain initial access into the house due to burglar bars on the doors, and a BRFD rescue unit had to pry the doors open on the house.

No one was home at the time of the fire, but the dog in the home died in the fire. The house and its contents received heavy fire and smoke damage estimated at $35,000.

Investigators asked that anyone with information about this house fire contact Baton Rouge Fire Department Arson Investigators at 225-354-1419 or Crime Stoppers.
