A man in a wheelchair struck by a car while attempting to cross Essen Lane in Baton Rouge has died, according to police.

The man, identified as 61-year-old Clay Barras, of 11580 Perkins Road, was not in a crosswalk or an intersection when he was struck about 6 p.m. on New Year's Eve in the 5000 block of Essen, said Baton Rouge Police spokesman Sgt. Don Coppola Jr.

The crash involved a 2010 Honda Accord, which was traveling in north on Essen Lane in the inside travel lane. Barras was in the easterly direction.

Impairment was not a factor, Coppola said.

Barras was transported to an area hospital, where he died from his injuries. The driver of the Honda was not injured and is not expected to face charges.
