The spokeswoman for Baton Rouge Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome accepted a new job as Southern University's communications director on Tuesday and will start in January.

Janene Tate, Broome's communications director, will leave her office on Dec. 31 and start at her alma mater on Jan. 3 if the Southern University System Board of Supervisors approves her hiring Friday. Tate's city contract is set to expire on Dec. 31.

The board approves positions with salaries greater than $60,000, according to the meeting agenda. Tate's salary is listed as $75,000. The board will meet at 9 a.m. Friday at the Hyatt Regency in New Orleans.

Tate told The Advocate on Wednesday night that she has talked with Broome about pursuing a job in higher education because that is where she feels her skills best fit. Tate has both an undergraduate and master's degree from Southern University and worked in student media there.
