A New Orleans teacher union leader will be interim president of the Louisiana Federation of Teachers, a spokesman for the group said Monday.

Larry Carter, who is president of the United Teachers of New Orleans, will hold the slot until a permanent replacement is elected in November.

Carter may seek the post permanently.

The LFT is one of the state’s two teacher unions.

Carter succeeds Steve Monaghan, who retired earlier this year after 13 years as LFT president.

Les Landon, a spokesman for the LFT, said the organization’s constitution says the group’s executive vice president -- the post held by Carter -- becomes interim president in case of a vacancy.
