Baton Rouge Community College is pushing back the start date of its spring semester after heavy rains during the past two weeks led to widespread power outages on the school’s Mid-City campus.

BRCC spokesman Steve Mitchell said administrators have not worked out when day classes will start, but he said it definitely won’t be Jan. 22 as scheduled.

Students are encouraged to make payments or add and drop classes online, Mitchell said, as crews continue working to restore power to campus buildings.

When the campus reopens, Mitchell said, the school will be flexible in addressing any student needs that can’t be handled online.

All but one campus building lost power Monday after the rains damaged the campus’ underground electrical distribution system, he said.

Administrators will finalize a new spring semester calendar before deciding on a start date, he said.
