One day after the House rejected a similar bill, a measure to trim the East Baton Rouge school board was approved Thursday by the Senate Education Committee.

The legislation, Senate Bill 672, would require the 11-member panel to be trimmed to nine or fewer members.

If the measure wins final approval it would be null and void if the local board has a redistricting plan in place by Aug. 1, said state Sen. Bodi White, R-Central and sponsor of the bill.

A similar effort, which would shrink the board from 11 to nine members, has failed twice in the state House, including Wednesday.

“Send it over there and see what happens,” White said of prospects for his bill in the House if it wins Senate approval.
