Efforts to trim the size of the East Baton Rouge Parish school board through a state law appear to have ended on Wednesday.
State Sen. Bodi White, R-Central, shelved his own proposal — Senate Bill 672 — and told senators that the local board is tackling the issue.
White’s bill would require the 11-member board be trimmed by at least two members.
It won approval in the Senate Education Committee last week one day after the House, for the second time, rejected similar legislation.
Backers have said a smaller board is needed to improve efficiency.
Opponents say the issue is already being studied by the panel and that the Legislature has no business ordering a reduction.
